Book Club @ Stey-Nevant!
Thank you to everyone who came to the first meeting of our book club. Mr. Underwood was very happy with the questions and active participation. The next meeting is September 27th at 5pm. We have moved the meeting to Thursday to try to accommodate more people. Mr. Underwood will be discussing selections and lessons from the first 15 chapters of The Mis-Education of the Negro by Carter Woodson. Pick up your copy at the library!
Stey-Nevant is now a branch of the Community Library of the Shenango Valley!
As has been accurately reported in The Herald, more than 8 months ago, the City of Farrell sought the assistance of the Community Library of the Shenango Valley (CLSV) to operate the Stey-Nevant Public Library on its behalf. After extended discussions, the Board of Directors of CLSV unanimously agreed, and after a process of several months, Stey-Nevant became a branch of CLSV on January 1st of this year.
This is not a hostile acquisition, or the result of mismanagement. The reality is that operating a public library is not a core function of municipal government. Also, just as the City of Sharon realized it could no longer afford to operate its public library about 10 years ago, today Farrell realizes that it cannot as well.
Financially, CLSV has had to survive on a combination of state aid for its service area (a portion of allotted tax revenue based on a formula), limited municipal contributions and increased private fundraising. The Farrell branch will likewise continue to receive state aid for its service area, but now, as reliance on Farrell property taxes is reduced, increased private funding must be raised. The Friends of the Stey-Nevant Public Library have already begun this effort.
The transition has been very difficult for staff and volunteers who have given decades of quality service to the City of Farrell and Stey-Nevant. This pain was compounded by the Library closing temporarily while renovations to improve interior lighting took place. This temporary closure was planned before the library transition, and is part of the City of Farrell’s commitment to keep a first-rate library facility.
The Library continues to have the same quality programs and services it has traditionally featured for people of all ages. The same staff and volunteers look forward to being part of the new Library system. CLSV Stey-Nevant will also offer new programs and services that will be shared from the Sharon location, open to the citizens of Farrell. A monthly calendar of events is published and available in advance, so that residents will know what is happening at both CLSV and Stey-Nevant.
We are excited about the future of CLSV and the Stey-Nevant branch. We look forward to working together with the Farrell community and continuing to provide outstanding library services to our growing service area.
